AMA’S STORY

Ama’s Story is a 22 minute live action animated hybrid special aimed at kids aged 4 – 7. It is based on the real family life of the creators, a black British couple of Ghanaian and Nigerian heritage, and their experience of not being able to find a book that represented their daughter and also a character she could dress up as.

The episode is seen through the eyes of the youngest child in the family, 6 year old Ama. Ama lives with her two older brothers, Ade and Ayo, her dad and mum plus the family cat Smokey.

Our story  is about 6 year old Ama who can’t decide on her favourite book for her school’s book day. She likes lots of things in lots of books but there isn’t one book that encapsulates everything she loves – her family, her cat, her heritage to name but a few. Her family help her realise that she can tell her own story and using her big imagination, she tells a wonderful story that involves all of her favourite things, including a Kente cloth jacket that reminds her of Ghana.

When Ama is telling her story, animation will pop on screen and bring Ama’s huge imagination to life for the viewers. The family love Ama’s story so much that they help her make it into a book for her school’s Book Day. She proudly goes to school the next day wearing a Kente cloth jacket that Nana made her and reads her book to the rest of the class who love it too.

The Ama’s Story special encourages all kids to enjoy reading and also to tell their own stories. Everyone can be a writer if they want to!
