Video 2: What makes an idea?

The very first part of the process is coming up with an idea. Once you’ve mulled it over in your head, it’s useful to think critically about it and ask yourself some key questions.

1. Do you love the idea? Does it inspire you? Does it express something within you?

Passion projects always make better shows that shine above others. Series like “Russian Doll”, “The Flight Attendant”, “Mare of Easttown”, “It’s a Sin’ --- these are all shows that came from a creator’s heart, and they captivate our attention because of it.

2. Does your idea translate to TV? Can you picture the episodes?

3. Which genre is your idea in? Straight comedy? Drama? Dramedy?

4. Do you think your show should be live action or animated? Make sure you have good reasons for choosing either medium.

5. What would you put on the advertising poster? What would the pitch line be?

6. Who will watch your show? What target audience are you trying to reach?

7. Why should your show be made? What does it add to the marketplace?

Most importantly, remember to focus on ideas that come from the heart and feature stories that only you can tell. We’re interested in seeing your unique point of view.
